When saving, ALWAYS include the assignment name.  Other things you could include to help organize better include- the date (use dashes- not slashes/), the assignment name including chapter, page number, and/or topic.

It is good to begin creating folders in your Google drive for each subject.  Within each subject make a folder for each chapter.

M/T-  Zoom Meeting- HOW TO: Make your family crest

RULES FOR MAKING YOUR FAMILY CREST

    1. Normally, I would have everyone draw the crest, but because we are online, you may choose to make yours digitally..

    2. Choose only two colors for the shield. This does not count black as an outline of your individual elements.  You may also have white or silver as part of the shield that do not count as your two colors (that would be considered an uncolored part of a shield).

    3. DO NOT EVER PUT WHOLE FLAGS ON YOUR SHIELD.

4,   Choose your two colors so that they represent something. It is easiest to choose colors that represent your family countries of origin.  Look for colors that can represent more than one country.  I like to make a list of the countries and then to the right of the countries write the colors of the country flag. For Example: England- Red, white

                                   Germany- Red, black, gold

                                    Wales- Red, green, white

Then I circle colors they have in common. Here would be red that represent all three. then I can choose any other color that compliments it.

    5. You can include a helm (a helmet or animal head that is above the center of the shield.

    6. You might include mantling (plants or cloth hanging from the across the top and down the sides) Flowers and leaves should be chosen that represent something important for the family. If you choose cloth, the colors need to represent something.

    7. You might choose supports for the sides of the shield.  It might be animals (usually, the animals are rearing up on their back legs with their front legs pushing against the upper quarter of shield). It could also be tools (crossed like a rake and hoe in an X, or they could be individual tools leaning against the shield like a shovel on one side and a pick-axe on the other).

    8. Include your last name on a banner or sign above or below the whole shield.

    9. Choose a family motto.  This could be something your family has passed down for generations, something that one of your parents or grandparents say regularly that is meaningful, or a phrase or verse that you think represents your family.  Talk to family members for ideas.  Then, translate it to one of your family countries of origin languages, or choose Latin.

    9. Create a key that includes all colors and everything you put on your crest and what it represents.  Also, include the motto in English and where it comes from.

    Henry VIII- Oversimplified

Ask "Where is my family from?  What is my heritage?"

Heraldry Project-  Part Two DUE Wednesday

Basically this is a report on the origin of the student's ancestry in the form of a coat-of-arms.   There are only two absolute requirements for this:  1.  All symbols, colors, and shapes the student uses in their coat-of-arms must have a purpose, and 2.  There must be a key to show what those symbols, colors, and shapes mean.  Then, there's some writing to do, to help explain some details.

I am spending a few minutes with every student to try to help them figure out the simplest way to represent everything they believe to be important to their family.  THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PROJECT.  I just want the students to ask questions about their family.   We will only use what they know.  It makes history a lot more interesting when they know that they may have had family in the middle of it.

    Heraldry Project-  Quick Explanation

Basically this is a report on the origin of the student's ancestry in the form of a coat-of-arms.   There are only two absolute requirements for this:  1.  All symbols, colors, and shapes the student uses in their coat-of-arms must have a purpose, and 2.  There must be a key to show what those symbols, colors, and shapes mean.  Then, there's some writing to do, to help explain some details.

I am spending a few minutes with every student to try to help them figure out the simplest way to represent everything they believe to be important to their family.  THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PROJECT.  Don't send your saliva off to some DNA testing company.  I just want the students to ask questions about their family.   We will only use what they know.  This is about the family that matters to the student, not necessarily genetics.  It makes history a lot more interesting when they know that they may have had family in the middle of it.

Ask "Where is my family from?  What is my heritage? Where did our family come from before America? When? What did our family do for a living in the past? Are there any common careers, skills, or hobbies that have been passed down through the family?

This is the project I gave you the giant paper for.  DO NOT TRY TO DO THE PROJECT YET!  But, spend this time to get some background info to make it easier.  Before April 6, call family members, talk to mom and/or dad, talk to grandmas and grandpas.  Find out what you can about where your family is from. This is not about genetics.  It is about who you consider your family.  If you love your step mom and want to include her family in your heritage, do it.  If you haven't seen your dad in years and don't care what his grandpa did for a living because it has not had any effect on you, don't include his information.  If you are adopted, include the people you love.  I don't care if someone is legally your parent or guardian, it is about who has had an effect on your life. If the nice retired man down the street cares about you, and you care about him, he might count as part of your heritage.  That is up to you and your family to decide,  This is about who has had an effect on you growing up.

THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PROJECT.  Don't send your saliva off to some DNA testing company.  I just want the students to ask questions about their family.   We will only use what they know.  Don't get worried about how much info you have about your family.  Just document what is easily accessible.  This is about the family that matters to the student, not necessarily genetics.  It makes history a lot more interesting when they know that they may have had family in the middle of it.

HOW TO: Coloring Map-  Pick up a map of the Roman Empire in class.  Pick three colors (blue is a good choice for water, the other two are completely up to you).  Write your words and definitions straight across the page.  If you are writing in the water area on the map, use blue, when you cross a line, change to the appropriate color so that you are coloring the map using the words in the correct color.  reuse words and definitions to completely color the page.  Option- some people like to use a pen or marker to write, then fill in the background with crayon or colored pencil.  It makes a nice effect.

HW- READ Ch 6 Sec 2

How to make summaries.  READ  first, then :

                  1.  Look at one titled section at a time

                  2. Write the title as a heading.  (You can use color if that works for you.) (For the first page, there is not title.  Label it "Introduction")

                  3.  Pick out the most important ideas.

                  4.  Write them in your own words.

                  5. You need at least 2 sentences but no more than half the number of sentences you read to summarize.  A good rule of thumb is at least one sentence per paragraph.

                  6.  Always write the vocabulary and definitions in the section (They don't count as a summary sentence.)

Look at "Ch 6 Summaries Blank" below for an example.

                  Rise of Greece BIG IDEAS

                  1.  Ancient Greece was centered around the Aegean Sea- all travel, trade, and life was centered there

                  2. Democracy was developed in Greece-  One Man=One Vote

                  3. Greece Influenced Rome

                  4.  Both Greece and Rome influenced the USA- culture, art, writing, architecture, philosophy, and government
