    Reading

We are really excited to be implementing a brand new Language Arts curriculum this year from the WONDERS program.  Our whole group reading instruction each week will focus on an essential question and include reading several stories from the same genre.  With this, we will work on high frequency (sight) words, spelling words, vocabulary, language skills and writing.

We will also be using ideas from The Daily Five for small group and one-on-one reading instruction.  Click on the website below for more information!

Scholastic Reading Counts is a web-based quiz program that we will be using to increase comprehension.  Books from our classroom and the elementary library are labeled based on a points system.  Each quarter, the children will be given a goal of a certain amount of reading counts points to earn.  They can earn these points by reading books and passing quizzes on the school computers.  See the website below for a list of books and their point values.

*Please try to complete 30 minutes per week on Prodigy for each week that we are off.  Use the link above.

**New this week**  I would like to have the kids start a journal about this crazy time we are in!  I read something over the weekend that said if kids were documenting what life is like right now, what an awesome keepsake they will have for the future when all of this is behind us.  They can make a journal out of paper, use pages in their writing journal, or write in a diary or journal that they already have.  I will post some questions each day to give them ideas of what they could write about.  Have them date each of their entries and two or three sentences will be fine!

*OPTIONAL*  We started a pen pal project with the 5th graders before school closed.  We wrote to them in February and I received their letters back last Monday, after school closed.  I will be sending a picture of your child's pen pal letter to you.  The kids can write back and send me a picture of it, or better yet, type their letter in a GOOGLE DOC and send it to me and I will see that their pen pal gets their response!  PLEASE STILL CONSIDER DOING THIS IF YOUR CHILD HASN'T YET!

    Monday:

    ZOOM MEETING AT 11:00!

    • Go to WONDERS Online and read Helping to Make Smiles on pages 428-429.  Complete pages 52-53 in the Reading/Writing Companion.
    • Go to the back of your Math Journal and carefully tear out Activity Pages 7-12.  Cut out all of the shapes.  Parents please look at the Unit 8 Family Letter here.  The first two pages have a lot of great information to remind you about geometry!  If you are able to print the letter, it will be helpful for this week's lessons!  Have the kids sort their shapes by how many sides they have (3, 4, 5, or 6).  Discuss how 3 sided shapes are called triangles and have 3 sides, 3 vertices, and 3 angles.  Four sided shapes are called quadrilaterals and have 4 sides, 4 vertices, and 4 angles.  Five sided shapes are called pentagons and have 5 sides, 5 vertices, and 5 angles.  Six sides shapes are called hexagons and have 6 sides, 6 vertices, and 6 angles.  Save your shapes in a baggie for tomorrow.

Please discuss right angles and parallel lines.  Something I always say is that parallel        lines are like train tracks.  They stay the same distance apart and will never touch or          cross each other.

    • Cut out the Shape Capture Attribute Cards on Activity Sheet 13 in the back of the Math Journal.  Put these cards into a pile and turn them face down to make a draw pile.  Take out the shapes from yesterday and lay them out so they can all be seen.  Work together to turn over an attribute card and try to find all of the shapes that match the description on the card.  Return the shapes and try again with the next card.
    • Practice math facts on Math Magician for at least 5 minutes.  Use the link above and if you pass that level (Passing is 95% or 100%), take a picture and send it to Mrs. Swaney!  If you pass a level, move on to the next.  If you can't remember where you left off, send Mrs. Swaney a text and ask!
